Video Production Tips: What Actually Matters Before You Shoot

Video production tips almost always start with gear lists. Skip that. The tips that actually move the needle happen before you ever touch a camera, and after you've already stopped filming.

Plan harder than feels necessary

A script, a shot list, a real schedule. It feels like overkill until the day you don't have one and you're scrambling on set while the light you needed disappears. A well thought out plan doesn't slow you down, it's what lets you move fast once you're actually rolling, because nobody's standing around figuring out what's next.

Buy for the job, not for the flex

Your camera, lighting, and sound gear should match the job in front of you, not whatever's trending in a gear review. A great camera with bad light still looks bad. A modest camera with great light and clean audio can look better than most people expect. Wistia's production learning center has good breakdowns of this if you want to go deeper on what gear actually matters and what doesn't.

Here's a showreel that makes that point better than I can explain it:

Edit like the footage is expensive, because it was

Post-production is where most of the value gets found or lost. Cut anything that doesn't earn its place, even if you love the shot. Sound design and color do more heavy lifting for the finished feel than people give them credit for. A polished edit is the difference between content that looks professional and content that just looks expensive to make.

Hire well or don't hire at all

If you're bringing in a production team instead of doing it yourself, vet them the same way you'd vet any other vendor. We wrote a full breakdown of exactly what to check in how to choose a video production company, and most of it applies whether you're a hotel or not.

Shoot once, use it twenty times

The best production tip nobody follows: plan every shoot to produce more than one deliverable. A hero film, cutdowns, verticals, stills, all from the same day. We break down the full math in one shoot, thirty content pieces, and it changes how you budget a production entirely.

If you'd rather have a team handle the planning and the plan behind it, let's talk. Reach out through the contact form or email hello@visioneers.studio. It starts with a conversation.
